Sometimes I can go straight to the canvas and start painting, Sometimes I can't. This is one of those times.
When I see that I'm having trouble with values (the lights and the darks) I do sketches. The black and white one was done with 2B, 3B, 6B and 12B Graphite pencils. This helps me to see the lightest, mid tone and darkest area of the painting. Next I do a pastel painting to experiment with the colors. With this painting I'm able to choose my palette. I'm going to be painting this with Flashe Paint. If you're unfamiliar with Flashe Paint, I explain what it is in an earlier post.
Occasionally I'll do a gouche study if I'm really having trouble with values, color scheme or placement of elements in the painting. For this one I think I'll go to the canvas. The finished painting will be 16x20x2. It's a replacement for one I'm putting up for sale.
It's hard sometimes to place a painting for sale. Each painting I do has a piece of me in it, what I feel, where I go when I look at it.
In case you're wondering what happened to the other work in progress, it bit the dust. The paint wasn't working. It was like I was arm wrestling with it every time I worked on it. I may try it again later on, but for now it's in Paint Heaven.
I hope this is helpful if you paint or draw. Maybe it gives another step to paint or draw better. Another option.
